When I first got pregnant I set a goal to gain 25- 30 pounds total. I have blown that out of the water and gained 45 pounds. I have no excuses and I know exactly how it happened. I made healthy choices but also indulged in ice cream, desserts, salt and vinegar chips, bagels with cream cheese, bacon, and lots of pancakes with butter and syrup. I attended 7 weddings while pregnant and enjoyed hot appetizers (hellllooo lobster grilled cheese !!!!), wedding cake, and shirley temples to my hearts desire. I enjoyed Thanksgiving more than I ever have before and totally over did it when it came to the eating at holiday parties. I can say without a doubt that I truly ENJOYED the food I was eating, without worrying about what it was doing to my body or how it would effect my long run the next day.
Why did I indulge? Because I wanted to. For the first time in a long time I was not training for a race and was not really focused on how my body looked. I made sure to get all the nutrients I needed to ensure a thriving fetus through healthy and protein packed meals, but I also gave into my cravings. It was liberating and amazing and I truly loved every minute of it.
AFTER (40 WEEKS)
But now it is 9 months later, induction is set for Friday morning and I am ready to get back in the game. I know I will not be focused on fitness for the first few weeks/months of motherhood, and that’s how it should be. I will be focused on my baby and breastfeeding and soaking up every precious moment I can with my new born.
So what is my plan? Clean up my eating right away through quick healthy meals that will allow my milk supply to thrive and keep me feeling as energetic as I can. Keeping fresh fruit, cut up veggies, readily accessible ingredients for things like smoothies and oatmeal will help with this process. As soon as I am cleared to exercise I cannot wait to start the couch to 5k program to get my running back on track. And I think I will weep tears of joy (and pain) after my first bikram yoga class.
Most of all , I am excited to set a healthy example for my baby girl. I want her to see her mom making healthy eating and fitness a priority. I want her to see me indulge in cake and ice cream, but still creating a balance with lots of fresh fruits and veggies.
I am excited for this next challenge in my life. Motherhood, balancing fitness and eating well with having a newborn. Sounds exhausting and amazing and I cannot wait 🙂
